Austinville Valley is blessed with a diverse range of wildlife species. Unfortunately, the health and welfare of this wildlife population is constantly under threat from urban development pressures.
The decline of the koala population due to bushfires in recent years signifies their protection is ever more important. Greater gliders too have recently been listed as endangered. Greater glider sightings have been made in Austinville and they need our help in order to survive in the valley.
There is an abundance of wildlife in Austinville
The endangered greater gliders:
1.2m+ from head to tail; can glide up to 100m between trees
Can turn 90 degrees in mid-flight. Austinville is a hot spot
Fresh koala scratchings can be seen and koala activity heard around many properties, including those near 79 Austinville Road where owners have proposed to build 30 cottages and other buildings. Such a development represents an intense use of this 50 acre property, as significant tree clearing would be required.
Fireworks
Fireworks distress livestock, wildlife and domestic animals. They are also a fire risk. Report fireworks if you hear them in Austinville Valley. You can read more here
